Senior Photos 101: Your Teeth

Senior Photos 101: Your Teeth
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Senior Photo Advice: Your Teeth
Your Professor: Natasha, of Timber Creek Photography

I am going to make today's blog very short and simple: Whiten your teeth!

Do you have to? No. Should You? Only if you want to. Can you? Yes!

Walgreens offers dozens of teeth whitening products to fit all types of teeth: Yellow, Stained, Sensitive... etc. If you feel your teeth are yellow then just grab a pack of whitening strips and apply them for two weeks. By the time your Senior photo appointment arrives your teeth will be a few shades whiter!
I have used them before and I love them!

Now, do you think I care if your teeth are yellow? Not at all! If you don't mind your yellow teeth then leave them exactly the way they are, I promise you that we won't notice or care! But if you don't like them then do something about it BEFORE your appointment :)

Looking forward to speaking with you about your Senior Session!

FUN! Fashion Lighting

FUN! Fashion Lighting
There are some days that I come to work not knowing what on earth I will be doing. This was one of those days.

So Pam and I were watching a video tutorial on fashion lighting (yes, we educate ourselves on a nearly daily basis) and we saw a really weird technique for getting unique lighting. Although we are not going to share it with you we can assure you it is strange.

Anyway, we get all excited to try our new technique and realize... no photo shoot today! Who are we going to take pics of???

Deep Breathe

Me. So, I hobble out to the studio with my sprained ankle dragging behind me and I pop in front of Pam's camera. It was weird to be on the other end of the job. I'm not a model and I don't pretend to be, but we needed a subject.

So this is me, in my rain jacket (because the white tank I was wearing was hideous) and my hair is a giant mess. I assure you I did straighten it that day but the moisture in the air got it wavy again.

Anyway, after trying the techniques we notice something kinda cool... the pictures have a beautiful, warm quality to them. My skin glows nicely (which is good because I am white as snow. The only color on me are my freckles) and the colors around me become bold. I'm thinking this technique would be fantastic for fall portraits, and for playing around with some Seniors, trying to get that "model" coloring in the photograph without doing any lighting editing.
Enjoy our lighting practice!

Senior 2011: Kacie!

Senior Photos: Kacie!
By Timber Creek Photography Studio, Mauston, WI

Today I get to share a Senior session with you. Kacie's photos turned out amazing. We did them right here at Timber Creek Photography's indoor/outdoor studio, even though she would have been able to take advantage of her free location shots. What I love about Kacie is her natural beauty and terrific smile; these two things showed up in every photograph! Plus, it was fun to take pics of a cheerleader!

Senior Photos 101: More than Enough!

Senior Photos 101: More than Enough!
Your Professor: Natasha!

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Senior Photo Advice: More than Enough!
Your Professor: Natasha, of Timber Creek Photography

This Summer we are urging our Seniors to go into overdrive when it comes to their props.

What is a prop? A prop is anything you bring that makes your Senior Photo Session just that much more special; it can be any object or objects that enhance the scene. If you play volleyball you may bring a ball and pads. If you play football you may bring a helmet and a ball... and the list continues. But we are hoping to convince you to bring more. Much more.

Instead of bringing one bat, why not bring five bats and a bucket of balls?
Instead of bringing your two pom-pons, ask a few friends if you can borrow theirs and bring six or more!
If you are into volleyball, bring a net with you! We can definately incorporate that into the scene.

We are asking you to think about everything you would need if you were going to play that sport, and then bring as much of it as you can get your hands on because the more stuff you bring the more we have to work with... and your Senior photos will be truly unique!

So go all out this year and bring ten of everything! Maybe it'll be to your advantage!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your Senior Session!

Senior Photos 101: The Importance of Chapstick!

Senior Photos 101: The Importance of Chapstick!
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Senior Photo Advice: The Importance of Chapstick!
Your Professor: Natasha, of Timber Creek Photography

Have any of you ever kissed a mustache-clad gentleman only to discover that you get way more than you bargained for? Not only do you get a kiss, but you get a mustache burn! Let's all just admit it, they hurt! That rough stubble coming into contact with your smooth face is uncomfortable and annoying and often ends the kissing early.

Ladies, what if there were something you were doing during a kiss that made the guy feel just as uncomfortable? Wouldn't you want to remedy the situation so that he would enjoy your kisses even more? Afterall, I know lots of ladies who demand that their man be babyfaced prior to a makeout session. Maybe your man is screaming for you to do something for him . . . but he is too shy to admit it.

We are talking about chapstick, people! What did you think we were talking about? And yes, this has to do with your Senior Photo Session so just chill out and keep reading. I am not starting a relationship advice blog so don't get any ideas Moms...

Chapstick is one of the most powerful weapons we women have in our beauty arsenal. This is my go-to beauty secret and I know that this cheap, smelly balm is one of the biggest sellers to celebrities as well. They don't care that it isn't pretty, they care that it works. I have even read articles dedicated to the stuff in Lucky magazine, Good Housekeeping, and Seventeen.

If your lips are chapped and your man is kissing them, then odds are he has noticed. Your lips are cracked and can hurt him as much as stubble hurts you! So invest in some $1.99 chapstick!

If I could force every Senior to come to their Photo Session wearing Chapstick I would but since I am not the leader of the world (yet) I can only encourage you to smear on some chapstick before coming to your session. Why? Your lips are cracked, dry and wrinkled and the camera can see that! For soft, model-like skin on those lips make sure you moisturize them! Although I am pretty handy with Photoshop I don't intend on digitally fixing your lips, so please put on some chapstick before your session (and before your dates!).

Here are some other uses for chapstick that I was able to dig up (some I have totally tried in the past and can tell you that they work):

- Use it on dry skin when you don't have your lotion (elbows, hands, etc). (I do this alllllll the time)
- Apply some around your nose when you have a cold . . . it can soothe the raw skin. (I tried it with mint chapstick...loved it)
- Keeping your unruly eyebrows in place! Apply chapstick to the brow to smoothe it down and hold it like a clear gel. (I thought I was the only one who did this)
- Apply to shaving cuts to prevent bleeding temporarily (hmm... that's new)
- Smear on a stuck zipper to get it moving again (what?)
- Can help remove a ring that is stuck on your finger (my husband could use this)

Hopefully I have convinced you to invest in your own little tube of chapstick!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your Senior Session!

Senior Photos 101: Mirror Practice: Serious VS Happy

Senior Photos 101: Mirror Practice: Serious VS Happy
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Senior Photo Advice: Mirror Practice: Serious VS Happy
Your Professor: Natasha, of Timber Creek Photography

If you have ever auditioned for a role in a school play, or been a part of an acting team then perhaps you have heard your coach/instructor tell you to "go home and practice in the mirror." This advice is wonderful; it gives you an opportunity to see what everyone else will be seeing when you perform.

If you can remember to do so, practicing your poses in front of a mirror prior to your senior session is a great idea. You will hopefully be able to notice that lifting your head up too high will give the camera a clear shot up your nose, or that whatever part of your body is closest to the mirror will look larger in the camera. Try to focus more on your facial expressions though. Do you need to relax your jaw when you smile? Or open your eyes a little wider? It is good to see what your body and face will look like in your shots!

Senior Photos 101: Fake Freckles!

Senior Photos 101: Fake Freckles!
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Senior Photo Advice: Fake Freckles!
Your Professor: Natasha, of Timber Creek Photography

I have freckles. Lots of them. And, unlike most of the freckled population I actually like mine; I wouldn't even mind having some more of them! While in high school I subscribed to Seventeen Magazine and came across an article for girls who didn't have freckles but wanted them. I read with interest! I had never heard of someone wanting freckles but apparently there is a freckle market somewhere. The advice they gave was excellent, and so I will be sharing it with you - it is one of my beauty secrets that I especially use during the sunless Winter months!

If you don't have freckles, or your freckles are fading, but you would like to either have some or enhance the ones you have you will need:

1 skinny brown eyeliner pencil.

That's it. You just take the pencil and gently press it on your face in normal freckling spots (around lips, around the bridge of the nose, and sometimes on the cheeks). If you already have freckles (like me) then you find the ones you have and go over them with the pencil to darken them. In the Winter months I do this so that my freckles show up at parties and in flash photos.

If you have freckles, or want some, but you want them to be more noticeable in your Senior Session, dot your face with some eyeliner :) Especially consider this when your appointment is in Winter, or if your freckles are light enough that they could dissappear in the photo flash. One small tip I would like to share with you is to NOT overdo your freckling. A light dot of color is all you need, and you don't need too many.

And don't make fun of my beauty secret! It's not weird to have fake freckles if you already have fake hair, brows, lips, boobs, nails... etc.

Looking forward to speaking with you about your Senior Session!

Senior Photos 101: The Gum Monster!

Senior Photos 101: The Gum Monster!
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Senior Photo Advice: The Gum Monster!
Your Professor: Natasha, of Timber Creek Photography

Once upon a time, in a photo studio very, very near, lived a Senior Photographer named Pam. Pam was a great photographer! She would joke with the kids, travel to fun photo locations, and often gave more than what was in the customer's contract. Pam's life was a happy one.
Then, one day a customer came into the studio that would haunt Pam forever. Although her name is too frightening to write, we will call her . . .

THE GUM MONSTER!

*insert high-pitched screams and organ music*

Pam was busily shooting amazing photos of a beautiful woman when she realized that this was no ordinary woman at all... she was chewing... GUM! She was the gum monster!!! Pam was able to shoo the monster out of the studio but the worst was yet to come! What would she see in all the photos? Would the gum be in EVERY photograph?! Oh, this was too much for Pam to bear!

She popped the Memory Card into the computer and hastily opened every photograph to view them up close. Sure enough, it was just as she feared! Bright green gum was covering the monster's teeth in EVERY photograph. And from that day forward, Pam hasn't been able to watch someone chew gum without smacking them upside the head.

The End

Ok. This story may have been exaggerated a tiny bit. But the point still remains: do not chew gum at your Senior Photo Shoot! The photos from this particular shoot were ruined. If you are smart you won't be chewing gum, or anything else when you come to your Senior Photo Session.

Looking forward to speaking with you about your Senior Session!
Timber Creek Photography, Mauston

PS. Pam does not abuse her customers, only her editor (that would be me :)

Senior 2011: Danen

2011 Seniors - Danen, Sparta
Senior Portrait Session by Timber Creek Photography

Danen is proof that you do not need to have a beautiful day to have beautiful portraits. We offer indoor/outdoor photos with every session and we can usually always find a way to make that work, despite unruly weather. I don't know how photographers do it when they are sans-studio but we have both a studio AND 100+ acres of farm land so we don't usually have to worry.
Anyway, it was pouring rain and we managed to get outside long enough to take some pics with an old car, and to get her walking through a field in her summer dress (no examples above, sorry... she had nearly 200 images to choose from so I randomly picked 5). Then we got back inside for some AWESOME indoor photos.
Danen loves to smile, and we are glad she does! Most Seniors ask that their photos be serious, which is most certainly the trend, so it was nice to break stride and loosen up with some very happy pictures! Plus, we LOVE the braces!

All this month Timber Creek Photography will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Advice: False Nails - True Beauty!
Your Professor: Natasha! Of Timber Creek Photography

If you notice the Senior Pictures on our website (http://www.timbercreekphoto.com/) you will see that current trends in photography show very close-up images of the subject (you). As a result, a lot of small details get noticed. One part of you that others will see are your fingernails. If you chew them, if the paint is chipped, or if they are dirty and yellow then people will see that in your photographs! Before coming to your Senior Photo Shoot you should spend some time with your nails.

Clean them up! There is an awesome new invention called "soap." You can find it at Wal-Mart.

File them down! Sand away those rough edges with a nail file!

Repair the nail! You can file down the cuticle, and fix the chipped paint on your nail.

Apply Press-On Nails! Get the fakes and save some time. (See the photograph of Danen above).

That's right, they have fake nails. If you don't want the whole world to see your nails then spring for some inexpensive press-ons and apply them the day before your senior photo shoot. They will make your senior photos a little more clean and you won't have to worry about your bad nails because they will be hidden by gorgeous fakes.

New Product: The Photo License Plate!

OK, technically this isn't a new product... at least not to Timber Creek Photography. But it might be a new product to you!

Now you can place your Timber Creek Senior Portrait on a colorful license plate for the front of your vehicle, or for your dorm room door, or for the wall in your bedroom, whatever!

I look forward to speaking with you about the unique products we can offer you!

Senior Photos 101: Glassless Glasses!

Senior Photos 101: Glassless Glasses!
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!
All this month we will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Advice: Glassless Glasses!

If you wear glasses then perhaps you have noticed a commonality amongst all your portraits: glass glare. Ugh. I know, right? We know you like your glasses and that they are an extension of you, and there is no reason why you should have to take them off for all of your Senior Photos (although we do take a few without them). So what do you do so that you can get the look you want without the glare? Remove the lenses.

That's right! It's that simple! Get out your handy dandy glass repair kit and find the itsy bitsy screwdriver in there and use it to remove the lenses from your glasses. Or, if you don't trust your unsteady hand, a lot of optometrists will lend you similar, empty frames for your Senior Photo Shoot! No one will ever notice that the glass was not in your glasses, and then you will be able to avoid a lot of glare.

Also, watch the photographer you book for your Senior Portraits. A lot of photographers, even professionals, have difficulty posing students with glasses and the pictures end up with white sun/flash glare where your eyes are supposed to be. This is unprofessional.
So do your part, or do your research!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session

Senior Photos 101: Men & Makeup!

Senior Photos 101: Men & Makeup!
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month we will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Advice: Men & Makeup!

When I refer to makeup on men I am not not promoting the idea that guys come to our studio looking like Adam Lambert; although it looks good on him, it is difficult to pull off. And he wears too much eyeliner - a thin line is all you need. What I am actually referring to is hunting and sports makeup. OK, I have no idea what you call it but I am sure you know what I mean! That thick, black paste that you rub under your eyes before a baseball game, or the camo green you cover your face with when you hunt. Why don't you bring that stuff with you to your session?

Afterall, most guys bring their sports uniforms, and their camo and guns... but no makeup! If you REALLY want your portraits to look unique, and more realistic, please bring everything you have to make your outfit complete... we will do the rest.

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session

Senior Photos 101: MAKEUP OR BUST!

Senior Photos 101: MAKEUP OR BUST!
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month we will be discussing various important advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Advice: MAKEUP OR BUST!

I know, I know, we are located in Mauston, Wisconsin; not exactly LA. Despite our location we still like to keep up with the current Senior Photo Trends. Guess what is hot right now? The Bold Look. That's right, no more soft, sweet, drab, pale, boring images... they are on the way out! What we need now are sharp lines, bright colors, and daring poses. Something that can help keep your photos bold and in style would be your makeup!

I actually sometimes wonder if anyone picks up a magazine. Don't you love Scarlett Johansson's red lipstick? Fergie's hot purple eyeshadow in her MAC campaign? Lady Gaga's fake eyelashes? Well, we do! If you really want your Senior pics to stand out YOU need to stand out. Afterall, these pics are of you; there is only so much we can do with lighting, posing and backgrounds so you need to bring it, girlfriend!

Thoughts for your makeup - Assuming you are planning on steering clear of the Natural look

Lip Color: Most people associate lipstick with Grandma, but there are some things that are never out of style. A little lip color or lip stain can go a loooong way in your photos. The color adds one more point of interest to your photos - sweet! Current trends are pointing toward pinks... both soft and hot.

Blush: Why did you buy that expensive makeup brush set if you aren't going to use your blusher?! Want a sweet, country girl look? Add some pink to the apples of your cheeks. Want a higher fashion look? Brush some dark tans on your face below your cheekbones. This thins your face and adds angles.

Eyeshadow: *Sigh* Wear it dark, wear it bright! Whatever you do, wear a LOT of it! When a flash of light goes off, it lightens your face, and your makeup! Apply double the eyeshadow you think you need so that when the flash goes off you won't look bare.

Eyeliner: Not always necessary but doesn't hurt! Watch your line thickness and opt for waterproof in case it rains.

Fake eyelashes: Hello! Every girl loves long lashes! Get some fakes at your local Wal-Mart! They are sure to open your eyes and add an incredible effect that most of your friends' images are missing.

If all of this sounds overwhelming, call a friend who knows what they're doing and ask them to do your makeup prior to your session. And be sure to bring your makeup with you just in case you need to reapply!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session

Seniors: High Fashion Portraits

Timber Creek Photography is taking a brief break from Senior Photo Session Outfit Advice to bring you this announcement:

Senior portraits have evolved over the years. In fact, every year we have to adapt to the new trends, crops, lighting and poses that Seniors want in their Senior Portraits. As a professional photo studio we need to stay abreast of the current trends. When people think of Mauston, Wisconsin (where we are located) they don't necessarily associate the city with "trendy." However, Timber Creek Photography wants to change that. If there is any person, or any business in Mauston that needs to be ahead of the game it is a Senior Portrait Artist. We feel that photographers who avoid the trends because they "don't personally like them" are shooting themselves in the feet.

So, what's hot right now, you ask? High Fashion... High Fashion everything. The crops are unique, the colors are bold, the lighting is intense (you can see a before and after of one of our seniors above).

Timber Creek Photography prides itself on being trendy and creative. If that is how you want your Senior Portraits to look then you found your photographer!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session!

Today's Outfit Advice: Your Skin Tone & Your Clothes

Senior Photo Outfits 101: Your Skin Tone & Your Clothes
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month we will be discussing various important outfit advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Outfit Advice: Your Skin Tone & Your Clothes

Lets start with a makeup analogy and then move on to outfits! If you are young woman then the odds are that you have worn foundation at least once in your life. Have you ever mistakenly purchased the wrong foundation and ended up with a streaky face that just looks wrong? Your foundation didn't go with your skin! The same thing happens when we buy clothes that do not go with our skin! We end up looking pale and flat when we could be using our clothing colors to enhance our best features!

I will use myself as an example.

I learned years ago that blue is most certainly NOT my color. Ew. The beauty of my green eyes falls flat and my skin looks sickly. I wear bright, warm colors because: A. I love bright colors, B. They attract attention (yes, I am an attention seeker) C. The warm reds, oranges, yellows and hot pinks work best with my skin, and D. I only get complements on my clothes when I am wearing warm colors (I pay close attention). So, if everyone thinks I look my best in warm colors then that is what I wear!

What colors do people rave about when you wear them? If you have an honest friend, invite them over to judge your clothes when you hold them up to your face. Maybe they can tell you what looks best with your skin/hair/eyes. Or, go online and look up your skin tone to find colors of makeup and clothing that will work best for you! Wearing the right colors can make your eyes look bigger, your skin look brighter, your hair look less drab, etc. I hope this will come in handy when choosing your Senior session outfit!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session

Senior Photo Outfits 101: You VS Your Mom Pt 2

Senior Photo Outfits 101: You VS Your Mom Pt 2
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

Today's Outfit Advice: You VS Your Mom Pt 2
Yesterday we discussed how you and your parents may have conflicting ideas about your Senior Session. We are going to dive into that a bit more, but this time we will focus more on the outfits and less on the process.

Parents will prefer you wear clothes that are a little more formal. They will likely want you to remove your piercings, cover your tattoos, and cover your flesh. Excellent ideas, especially for yearbook photos and family photos. However, you may disagree on the subject. You paid a lot of money for your tattoos and piercings, you spent over $100 on your torn jeans, and you just bought the coolest pair of high heel boots and you NEED to show them off in your photos... Our advice is to compromise!

Seniors: Put yourself in your parents' shoes. They want to show all of their friends and relatives what a beautiful/handsome daughter/son they have. They don't want people to be looking at all the extra stuff you wore, they want them to look at your face. They want everyone to see that you got your dad's eyes and your mom's smile. Their friends could care less about your outfit. So bring ONE traditional outfit so that your mom and dad will be happy with your photos - those portraits will be hanging in their house forever.

Parents: Try to remember what it was like to be your son/daughter's age. You didn't care about impressing family! You wanted to look just as stylish and "in" as everyone around you. You flat-ironed your hair, wore bell bottoms, or maybe brightly colored leggings and funky skirts that your parents thought were ugly but you and your friends thought were totally, like, stellar!

Please allow your teenager to wear clothes they love. Afterall, the pictures are pictures of THEM. If the pictures don't express them then they won't like the pictures. Period. And Senior Pics are supposed to be a REALLY fun milestone for them! Allow them to bring the "in" clothes or the wild makeup. They want to give these pics to all their friends, post them on facebook, and show them off like their prom dresses or first cars! Allow them to be themselves so that they can have as much fun as they are supposed to have!

One last note: For an additional cost, tattoos and piercings can be removed from portraits.

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session

Senior Photo Outfits 101: You VS Your Mom

Senior Photo Outfits 101: You VS Your Mom
Your Professor: Natasha Bouchette!

All this month we will be discussing various important outfit advice for your Senior Portraits! Check back often to gain ideas for your big day!

Today's Outfit Advice: You VS Your Mom
Side Note: Today's Advice doesn't necessarily address outfits - but read on!

When it comes to the Senior Portrait Experience we receive feedback from two sources. One source would be you; you have your own ideas about your photo shoot. Those ideas usually involve serious poses featuring your most unique outfits; replicas of images you have seen in current movies and magazines. The other source of feedback would be your parents. Most of the parents prefer their son/daughter to be smiling in their pictures. They also choose poses featuring your simplest outfits and minimal makeup. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your desires, or your parents desires for your photo shoot. They are both valid. However, we really need to make sure that both parties are on the same page.

Seniors: Include your parents in the Senior Photo process. That means that when you are shopping around for a photographer, show your mom and dad the website images you like and tell them why you like them. This is not only important for you, but it is important for us! The current magazine trends feature purposely crooked images and multiple images with the model's head partially cropped out of the photo (Our own examples are above). When we follow this trend the Senior loves it, but the mom won't purchase the photo because their child's head is "cut off." Please make sure your parents know the Senior photo trends you like, and that your photographer might be trying them! There is nothing wrong with your mom and dad disliking the current trend, but we would really like to know about it in advance of your photo shoot so that we can please both you and your parents.

Parents: Please do your research! We consider ourselves to be a really fun, unique and current studio. We subscribe to Elle, ESPN, W Magazine, Seventeen, Vogue, Teen Vogue, and Professional Photographers Magazine. Every month we receive these seven magazines and page through to see how celebrities are having their photos taken and we do our research on the hottest photo trends!

Both of You: Our studio is no stranger to compromise. No matter what we will always include some "simple," "traditional" portraits in the Senior session. They are great for yearbook photos and usually get chosen for the home's wall portrait. But we want you to know that we will likely try some wild and wacky portraits to keep up with the photographers on the coasts. Current trends are so fantastic and we encourage you to keep up with them as well!!!

Looking forward to speaking with you about your session!
